Borate Wood Preservative Treatments
Borates are a type of chemical compound that can be used as a wood preservative for log homes. These compounds are derived from the mineral borax. The compounds are commonly used to prevent and control insect and fungal infestations in wood.
When borates are applied to the surface of log homes, they penetrate the wood fibers and provide long-lasting protection against decay, termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-damaging organisms. Borates work by interfering with the digestive and reproductive systems of insects, inhibiting the growth of the bacteria they need. Borates are generally considered to be safe for human and animal contact when used as directed. They are also relatively easy to apply and can be added to stains or coatings to enhance their protective properties.
